Equipment

  • ruler/scale
  • tall glass or large bottle
  • permanent marker

Materials

  • 1 piece syringe
  • 1 tbsp sand or similar weight don't use iron ball bearings as they will rust and gain weight
  • 1 piece tape for sealing and making sure that the brix markings
  • 100 ml distilled or RO water 0 BRIX or 1.0 specific gravity reading
  • 100 ml water dissolved with 10gm of sugar 10 BRIX reference solution

Instructions

  • Take the plunger out of the syringe, add the straw, fill the syringe with 1/3 sand and seal the whole setup

  • Put it in distilled water and mark the water level as 0 BRIX
  • Put it in 10 BRIX solution and mark it as 10 BRIX
  • Using a scale extend the scale to mark 5, 10, 15, and 20 brix
  • Cover all markings with tape so that it does not get smeared. and your hydrometer is ready

Notes

this simple hydrometer is fairly accurate and gives you an indication of the level of fermentation and when it is time to move to secondary and bottling.
